Walking Bass Lesson -walking around static minor chords like 'So What' - Scott Devine

Sign in to disble this ad
Heys guys, I've had quite a few emails about how to create walking bass lines over static minor chords. For instance when you get 16 bars of D minor. Good tunes to listen too for examples of this are 'So What' and 'Impressions'.

Anyhooooo, here's the tutorial...
YouTube - ‪Walking Bass lesson - Static Minor Chords (SO WHAT) with Scott Devine‬‏

Hope it's helpful!

Easy,

Scott.

Scott, I've been playing for years and only now just relearning how I play the bass and I can honestly say you’ve just opened my fretboard with your dorian and melodic minor all over the board lessons. Thanks buddy, it's to you I owe a lot of my new found, open fretboard skillz!!

Yes! Enough meat here to keep me busy for several months. I'll be listening with paper and pencil in hand.

I've been reluctant to venture into scales and or modes relying instead on chord tones, but, the way you explained it I now understand how I can use modes and still keep my chord tones intact.

Great big light bulb just illuminated my World.

As always - Thanks

I understand the modes thing, really easy to understand, but how do you apply them?!! Listening to So What and just jamming in Dorian and melodic minor mode and finding all the D's on the fretboard like Scott said has made me fly all over, now to learn all the other modes, keys and arpeggios! This is the website I have been looking for, for ages.

Hey Stoob...

Modes... man these gave me a serious headache when I was younger playing the guitar (before i discovered bass is ... WAY COOLER!! LOL!)... I mean a SERIOUS HEADACHE!!! Whenever someone tried to tell me what they were and how to apply them It just sounded WAY to complicated... and guess what... it isn't complicated at all, it was just how the information was being given to me... or i'm just a bit slow!

I'm actually going to do a tutorial on 'what are modes' and 'how to use them'. I promise that when you watch it you'll be like "Wow - that's it!" You'll understand them straight away.

Ez man,

Scott.

I do understand them very well, it's just that applying them is where so many tutorials let people down, and you're right, on the bass modes are fantastic, especially where all the shapes in say Dorian can be transfered all around the fretboard.

Many tutorials also confuse people and don't explain properly, I would explain modes like this: A mode is a major scale, starting from the corresponding note of the scale but shifted down to the root note of the major scale you are playing i.e Dorian is mode 2, so you start to play the major scale starting from note 2 of the scale on the root and emphasise that with the major chord droning underneath to understand how the mode works with the major chord you are playing in. Showing the modes in a 3 note per string pattern is an easier way to explain in a video tutorial.

I just want to be shown examples of the modes used in a song and soloing with them, your scales coupled with arpeggio tutorial in a song like So What? really opened up my eyes, especially by using all the positions all over the fretboard. It would be nice to see how to use a combination of positions on various chords, but I know you have some on your website already.

I am an experienced bass player although I still would like to see some ideas for bass lines over basic chords (chromatic runs, arpeggios, melodic forms etc), or what the power of modes can do for playing chordal formations.

So i would love to see more modal examples and how to use them please

Stoob... Gottcha man! Great ideas. I'll add it to the list of tutorials i'm planning to do. First i'll do the 'what are modes' tutorial (because I think this is such a fuzzy subject for a lot of players), then i'll get straight into the application side of them.

Thanks for great question man!

easy,

Scott.
