OK, been playing a number of years, mostly rock/pop stuff. I've been working with a teacher for about a year (he's great) and now we're moving from Blues, and transition to Blues/Jazz, and then to Jazz. I feel pretty comfortable with playing Blues, and realize that there's a link from Blues to Jazz walking. My question....what are some really easy jazz/walking tunes I need to familiarize myself with? As you can likely tell, I'm really unsure of myself when it comes to walking, but I know my chords pretty well when looking at charts, so I know what possible note choices there are, but walking lines I've written in the past sounded like crap; very scalar, etc, with no flow.

Book recommendations are good, but so are names of tunes I might work on.

Help!

Thanks,

Mark

"I've Got Rhythm" is one of the most ubiquitous chord changes in jazz. most jazz players know the "rhythm changes"...shows up all over pop music too.

Be sure to learn it in all keys!

Ed Friedlands book on Walking Bass is good many have got their start with that book. As for tune find anything with Ray Brown on bass. He has his own CD's, but recorded with all the Jazz greats. There is also a Ray Brown clinic in about five parts on YouTube worth watching.

It's my party!

One thing I've been doing lately is writing out basslines for various sets of changes in all keys. That's helped my ability to construct a walking line on the spot.
