Thank you.
i am a long time bassist (Fender Jazz '78) and will learn to play jazz before i die. i did order "building walking bass lines" (Freidland) and "walking basics" (Fuqua) and am waiting on delivery. my theory is waaayyy basic and i can't sight read. i have a good ear and good dexterity (a lefty that plays righty).
any thoughts on further material(DVD's etc), a beginner's URB, on line instruction? i live in a small beach town.
thank you so much.
Sincerely, Kevin

You listed what you need to work on in your question, building walking bass lines, theory to understand what would work best and reading standard notation so you can see how others have done it.

I'd point you to The Real Book, Sixth Edition http://www.amazon.com/Real-Book-Bass.../dp/0634060767 to help with sight reading. You already have books on walking. I do not have Ed's complete book 1, 2 & 3 but anything Ed writes is worth your time.

As to theory, I would send you to something non bass specific. Such as Alfred's # 1,2 & 3. http://www.amazon.com/Alfreds-Essent.../dp/0882848976 That will start you on how to read standard notation. Plus give you a good start on your theory road. If you have a community College near by pick up something from the music department on theory, i.e. pure theory 101.

Plus listen to a lot of jazz. Google can find you plenty of that for free on the Internet. If you have cable TV I bet you already have a jazz cable selection. Jamey Aebersold Jazz will get you a catalog of all kinds of jazz material. Check out the play-a-longs in the bass section.

I found this helpful. http://ralphpatt.com/VBook.html Chord progressions and backing tracks.

Have fun.
