Want to switch to bass, how to tell the rents?

I've been playing guitar for 2 years and piano for 4 but I got a gig playing bass at church, and I think I'm in love. I'm using a spare Ovation bass that the chuch owns. I like the bass more than the geetar. My dad will be alright with it, but my mom, maybe not so much. How should I tell them?

Just tell them... they know you're playing at church, right? OR... does telling them mean you're gonna be asking for a whole new rig?

Get rid of the g****r and all things associated with it. Buy a decent bass. You don't need anything fancy, K? But you know that, because you're a bass player now. Buy a decent amp. You need something relatively loud. 200W min. Combos are OK! Be awesome. You won't go back, man. No one ever does. It is your destiny.

Yep. Hey, what better way to break the ice/news than the church angle.

Tell em bassists finger deeper, and always have a G string.

Bassclef2010 - "Mom, Dad... I want to play bass."

Dad - "What do you mean you want to play bass!? This family has played guitar for generations! I won't have you ruin our good name by changing to such a simple instrument!"

Bassclef2010 - "But dad! It's not..."

*slapped in the face*

Mom - "Harold! Please..."

Dad - "I said NO!"

*throws Bassclef2010 a guitar*

Dad - "Now go to Guitar Center and shred like a maniac paying no mind to keys whatsoever! You're GROUNDED!"

I can see how it can be difficult at times...

No son of mine is going to play a 4 string!!!

4 strings don't get along with short necks...

Women, AMIRITE?

JKJK, however I don't see why she would have an issue with you playing bass as long as it didn't cost them anything. If you have spent this much time on other instruments, then trying something else is just natural.

Does your mom have an bias against bass, or for piano/guitar?

Actually, I'd make them think I was coming out of the closet. Not to ascribe my world view upon your situation, but, considering you play in a church band, I'd imagine your parents would be at least remotely hesitant about you coming out.

You: "Mom, dad? I...I wanted to talk to you. About something important. You, uh, may not want to hear it, but I have to tell you. I need to tell you..."

Parents: Trepidatious silence

You: "Well, I...you know how sometimes, you think you want something, but then you realize you want the opposite? That's kinda where I am. I thought I knew myself, but recently, well, I've had these urges, like I'm not playing with the right team, y'know? And, I know you'll probably be disappointed to hear it, but I know, I just know--"

Parents: Wide-eyed fear

You: "--that I want to play bass."

Parents: "Thats it?! Let's go to Guitar Center!"

I mean no disrespect to you or your family, and I have no idea of their mindset or values, but I grew up Pentecostal, and that **** woulda worked for me!

What's wrong with the church bass?

My real question is: Do you play thru an amp at church. or thru a sound system with a sound man?

Just tell them you like playing bass so much you want to make it your main instrument. Keep an acoustic guitar on hand for when you get the urge and pick yourself up a nice bass rig.

Why do you think your mom be so bent about it?

When I told my parents, they tried to disown me. I was ex-communicated from all Guitar Centers. My father still won't let me play in the house. I have to go to the garage, and I can't plug in. My amp consists of a broken Sony boombox. I am afraid to play in public because I don't want people to judge me. I can't help it! It's the way I am. When I tell people I play bass, they look at me funny and change the subject, or go all crazy and tell me why it's a sin to play anything less than six strings and more than 28 inches.. If you haven't picked up on my sarcasm yet, then know this is a joke.

(Above is what happens when I get bored.)

Anyway, I told my parents after seeing The Newsboys in concert, and realizing that Jesus would play bass I had been playing the instrument-that-shall-not-be-named for around six months, and just enjoyed bass more. Be honest; it's not a disease or something. Rock on dude, and welcome to the deep end! Now go rock for Jesus (I see you play in church)!!!
