Wanting some feeback on this tune

Hey everyone,

A while back I entered into a contest that challenged people to do their own versions of their choice of a piece by the phenomenal guitarist Jesse Cook.

I usually just play bass the way its supposed to be played down around the low notes. But for this I decided to try my hand at playing "lead bass" as it were.

I produced it myself, played the real baseline as well as the lead line, and programmed everything else.

I didn't win the contest but I did want to know what some other bassists thought of it, so here it is.

Jesse Cook Cover Song Contest - (Makoa Johnson - Cascada) - YouTube

Thanks so much for your input,

Makoa

First things first - your playing demonstrates two very important elements that define that subtle line between just playing the notes and making them extremely musical:

1. Sensitivity; and
2. Inflection.

So, damn good on yer for that. I enjoyed the piece and I think you showed a high degree of musicianship. Here are two things that I think might make a small but possibly important difference - and this is just my own opinion, so take it for what it's worth:

1. Are you using tapewounds? I've used them a fair bit, and my main gripe with them is that I can't get enough tension with them, but there was a slightly "plasticy" sound in the higher register that might have been eliminated with metal strings. But then again, nylon-stringed classical guitar would be a natural instrument for this piece as well, so there's that; and
2. Man, that would have benefitted from a nice touch of chorus pedal.

But again, a fine piece of work - clearly, you've got some chops and with continued hard work, you could really make something with this music thing.

@JoeNerve: In my book heartfelt and musical would be the two most important things for a piece of playing to be, so thank you so much, I appreciate that.

@FretlessMainly: Regarding #1, they were roundwounds, but they were exceedingly dead (I think I may have even replaced them later the same day I shot that video.)
Regarding #2, you sir are a genius. I wish I would have thought of the chorus pedal because that definitely would have sounded sweet!

Thanks again to the both of you.
