A way to slow down MP3s without altering the pitch?

I hunted around for a bit and couldn't find an existing post, but if this is a repeat I apologize...

Does anyone have any programs they can recommend for slowing down a MP3 without altering the pitch? I'm trying to learn some tunes but the speed at which its played doesn't help me any to learn it and I'd like to play along, just slowed down. Windows Media Player does this to some degree but it sounds like it's underwater, through a garbage can, and a truck is driving by at the same time. Is there anything better?

I hunted a round a bit on Google and downloaded two programs, one which didn't work at all and one which didn't work well, so I thought I'd ask, rather than keep downloading shady freeware.

Audacity is what you want. You can even use an FFT to lower the highs and boost the bass. Then, if you know what you are doing use the spectrum analysis and pick out the exact notes!

If you want cheap and dirty, download Amazing Slow Downer. Works great and it's shareware...can't get cheaper than that.

Best practice works well for me. Slows down and allows looping.

Actually windows media player can do that. The drum beats sound a little out of sync, but if slowing down is all you need, it can be done.

Download chronotron, its a windows media player plugin. With that, you can alter both the tempo and pitch separately without too much reduction in sound quality. The best thing is you don't need a separate program and it couldn't be easier to use than it is.

It's not freeware though, but I found it on DC++ after having tested the trial version.

NO NO NO NO - you go and get Winamp, preferably v. 2.95 (may work on 5.x too if you have it already) and then a plugin for it called Pacemaker. It allows you to change pitch and speed independently with decent quality and won't cost a dime. You can even make it remember the settings for each song. Ditch the WMP, it's just a big load of crap. Audacity is a bit complicated and messy for this purpose only and Amazing Slow Downer ain't free.

The best free choice: Winamp + Pacemaker.

I use 'Transcribe!' on my iMac. Awesome piece of software. I use it all the time. It works flawlessly with virtually any file format out there.

Tascam makes a portable little unit that you can load you mp3's into... never tried it though.

On my MacBook, I use Audiolobe. $20. Key touches slow down or speed up the tune in semi-tone increments, no change in pitch. Of course, it will also change the pitch without changing the tempo just as easily, so I can practice the same play-along in all 12 sounding keys. Does loops easily.

I've made some enhancement requests for: Sound on sound, so I can record my own play on top of the play-along and listen to them played back together. A built in equalizer instead of just treble and bass sliders. And access to Audiolobe directly from iTunes, so I can use iTunes' display to select the pieces. Audiolobe's developer was very amenable to these suggestions and told me he wanted to include them in a future update.

Works great for me right now, just as it is, but with the enhancements . . . WOW!
