So in my bass lesson today, my instructor proceeded to show me a bass scale that goes up as normal, but on the way down, starting on the higher octave of the scale and coming back down to the lower, some of the notes in the scale were changed, which doesnt make sense to me at all, could some please elaborate? Thank you in advance.

Thats the melodic minor scale. 1 2 b3 4 5 6 7 ascending, b7 b6 5 4 b3 2 1 descending. I just gave a pretty detailed explaination in the music theory chain thread.

Just tell your teach your are a hard core Jazzbo then you can toss out changing it to descended.

Also works when you really play some real klunkers on stage. If anyone says anything just look 'em in the eye and say "I'm into Jazz man!" Then smile and walk away. They will think they have lame ears.
