I've been playing for maybe a couple months now, and I'm looking to start playing actual songs. Any suggestions? Any suggestions on some good books to pick up too?

Can't go wrong with the Beatles. Then you have those pop/punk bands like Green Day, Blink 182, etc. Hey, they're simple.

If you want some enjoyable lines try james brown ala bootsy or any disco tunes ie carwash, disco inferno or motown ie pointer sisters theres plenty to go around
I started with the grease album ( yeah I know you probably thinking boooo ) but when you learn it the lines are pretty groovy anyway I was about a teenager when the movie came out so naturally I was drawn to the groove
Anyway the bottom line is that should learn the song that you want to play and is a favourite of yours then you can enjoy playing which is a good moto to go by
Peace and happy practicing

The Grease soundtrack has some class bassline ... !! I had to learn some of it for a show last year and I was really impressed. I didn't like the bog-standard rock'n'roll numbers though.

The Police have some great lines that aren't too hard to master.

Also, take a look at this thread: --> Good bass riffs for beginners... , it's about 4 threads down.

I highly suggest you learn Rage Against the Machine songs. Within the first 3 months of me playing i learned all of their songs and it helped me get decent at bass quickly.

title?

I just started playing a month ago now. Here's a few I have learned :-

Roxanne - Sting (easy)
Teenage Kicks - Undertones (really easy and fun)
Hate to say I told you so - Hives (easy and boring)
Breathe - Pink Floyd (nice, but weird)
Paranoid - Black Sabbath (bit too fast for me)
Money - Pink Floyd (love it!)
Reach Out - Four Tops (hard but very rewarding)
Heard it through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye (as above)

I'm in a Motown kinda mood at the moment, so thats where I'll stay for a while! Got a Motown book from Bass Signature Licks, or something like that. Got all the tab and a CD with it. Also bought a couple of general instruction books but never read them.

Damn I love bass!

If you're in a Motown mood, you must get the quintessential bass book "Standing In the Shadows of Motown". It's a history lesson and bass R&B/funk schooling all rolled into one. Heck it even comes with CDs!

Don't thank me, thank the author.

Glad you're enjoying the book.
