Never thought I'd really listen to Metallica, so just because I'm in a good mood today:

He's not really playing chords, but a melody over open strings.

Basic chord is Em. In the second pattern he playes change notes to that chord of Em over the ground note E, using the open E-string, varying the 5th (which is B). The notes are something like : b b a b c b a b
I would barr string A/D/G at fret 14 and do the melody on G. (16 -14 16 -14 etc,..peace of cake)

The first pattern he plays is chord of D (over the open D). Something like e f# e f# a b a b. (on G, 9 -11 9 -11 14 -16 etc. )

Together he turns them into a kind of Celtic melody that goes like (all are single notes):

(on rootnote E) e b a b c b a b e b a b ba g | (on rootnote D) a_____ (long).

The real problem is of course waving your hair like he does.

Throw in some creativity of your own and have fun.

Dear Cliff, The numbers in my earlier post are tab numbers (16 -14 etc.). If you have a blank tab sheet, draw barlines for sufficiently wide bars. You wil need 4 beats per bar for this.
Start with the first pattern. On the G string (upper line) you write 9 11 9 11
On the D string you write 0 (zero) under those four numbers. Etc.

Does this help?
