What is this fill??

Sign in to disble this ad
For some reason, this little fill here:

G|-9-7--7---
D|----9---987

Is my mostest favourite little ditty to play...anytime I want to fit a quick fill in I usually resort to this one first...or sometimes I will just mess with it up and down the fretboard usually running the fill from G at the 12th fret G string down to the open E etc.

What am I playing with here, a straight pentatonic or what?

Thanks.

Context and function

Could be the top part of an E7 Bebop scale which is a dom7 scale + a M7 chromatic step added

Could be part of a B min Bebop which is a Dorian scale + a M3 step added

Could be part of a G Maj Bebop which is a Major scalee + a #5/b6 chromatic added

Could be part of A Blues scale which is a minor Pentatonic + a #4/b5 chromatic added

Could be none of these

Ryco, are you really sure about that? I guess you've read something wrong in the tab. It's on the D and G strings...

It's E blues (= minor pentatonic + #4/b5) without the minor third. Could be something else too, depending on the context as ryco said, but based on my picture of you based on what you've written here at TB, I think the E blues is the context you use it in.

Nope, you're absolutely right, Deacon_Blues - I totally misread the tab. I'm not vry good at TAB - obviously!

So it could be part of E Blues, maybe part of D Maj Bebop

The only thing I'm really sure of is that I'm not really sure about anything any more!

To me, when I say context I'm thinkin' -- "what key? What's the chord underneath this lick? Is it one chord changing to another within the bar? What's the chord progression?"

When I say function I'm thinking -- "where is this lick coming from and where is it heading?" Without any reference point it's hard to label a series of tones.

But anyway, I think he is talkin' E Blues scale
