What are good songs to play chord progressions on?

My teacher wants me to play along to some songs where it has the guitar part written in sheet music with the chord its played in written at the top, and for me to work around that chord in the scale.

_____C7_____________Fm____________E____

You get what I"m saying? like in those lines there will be the part for the guitar, and say in the first bar I play an F minor chord or something along those lines. Im actually not 100% sure what I'm doing, but I have an idea and everytime I go to a lesson it makes more and more sense. I swear theory confuses the hell out of me. Well any simple songs that I can actually get the chord progression to would be great. I tried playing unchained melody to some chord progression lyrics or w/e they are called on the internet. Does it really start out on G? Because I'll play a G note when it starts out and it sounds completely wrong. And I'm in tune.

If I was your teacher I would have you start with the Blues. Simple chord progression to start with chords don't change real fast give you a chance to play more of the scale. Even that I would have you start with arpeggios first and do scales later. Also help you start hearing ! IV V chord changes. Then as you become good with simple Blue then move Blue with more chords like Stormy Monday and later Same Old Blues by Freddie King. Playing Blues gets you playing jamming with CD's real fast. Also helps train ear for basic changes, you learn to feel bars go by and change chords, which help you learn to start setting up changes with your line. Most important learn to develop play with a feel. Playing Blues you will start developing skills you can use in any other style of music.

I would agree with the above two posts. I am a beginner with just a little theory. I play along to a lot of blues cd's. One of my favourites is Buddy Guy. As well as bringing scales to life, it is a very educational and immensely enjoyable way to begin playing bass.
