what to play on a d7

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all
ive searhed the forums and i dont know if im not just lookin in the rightplace but i cant find an answer

this is very simple but im new to bass

when looking at notes to play ill see something like d7, and if im not mistaken thats a chord. i thought that bass doesnt use chords. so does that mean just play the root( in this case D), or is that just for guitar players who look at bass stuff?

thanks in advance

you're right, thats a chord. and yes, bassists use chords- everyone does, from bassists to trumpet players in improvisation(me being both ). the chords outlined over your music are basically a road map (cliche i know), kind of an outline of the notes you should be playing. once you start learning more about music (i'm not sure if you're new to all music, or just playing the bass), you will know what that symbol means. check the other threads for help on chord structure and interpretation. you might want to read them immediately to understand what people are going to be telling you.

i'll give ya a quick fix tho- in this case, D7, the notes it's telling you to play go with the notes used for a D dominant chord. you can play the root, D- this is the easiest, simplest, and safest way to play with the music, but it gets boring after playing roots for thirty two bars. so get to know your chords and then you can experiment with notes and making your music more interesting.

and no, those chord names arent just for guitar players lookin over the bassists shoulders. everyone gets those notes, so that everyone knows what to play.

good luck, any q's post em or pm em!

First you should learn the structure of the chord itself. Than you will learn which notes make part of that chord.
Every note that makes part of the chord will be in tune.
Also you will find out which mode is being used in that specific chord progression, and immediatly you will know which scales aply best to that case.

And if you are just starting please don't try to play notes which are out of tune in strong beats... leave that to jazz

(I don't know if there's such term as "strong beats" in English, I translated it from portuguese :P)

Anyhoo... these are just a few hints that can help you in every ocasion.

Oh... three very important advises!
