What are Rock's "Rhythm Changes"??

Sign in to disble this ad
In the interest of being a great improvisor, I've been teaching myself harmony here and there by studying things like Pitson and Coker, but I'm primarily a rock player, and some of it doens't seem to apply.

For example, lately, I've been looking at generic chord changes to practice, so that I can improvise more in a rock situation. I know Jazz has its Rhythm Changes, but you don't see a lot of ii V I in Rock. Is it I IV V? I iv II V?

What are some progressions or maybe songs to practice or work over the way someone like a jazz saxaphone player would practice over ii V transitions or Rhythm Changes?

Thanks in Advance,

L

"Ice cream changes" was the term for old 50's-60's rock. I guess the term came from high school kids back then would hang out at the local ice cream shop listening to the juke box. No internet to download MP3's people actually got together and listened to music and dance.

most chord progressions that have become archetypes & 'stuff you jam on' usually have a song that exemplifies it:

i.e. Hey Joe -> C - G - D - A - E7#9 / / /

Knocking on Heaven's Door: G - D - Am - C

All Along The Watchtower: Em - D - C - D (hundreds of rock songs have Am - G - F - G (i.e. Stairway to Heaven) or similar)

I guess I-vi-IV-V has its origins in doo-wop music of the 40's & 50's... if you're gonna use this, don't forget a middle 8 that's based around: IV-I-IV-V7
