What should I play?

In a few weeks I have an important audition, and I want to learn two songs for it. I have already learnt "Something for Nothing" by Rush, can anyone give me some suggestions as to the other song I should learn?

Chops means your technical prowess, your ability to execute the things you want to execute.

There's a series of Bach Cello Suites that would probably be impressive, if you can pull it off.

Oh right, well ive not been playing very long so im not good enough to play anything like those bach cello suites, but i can play "Ramble On" and "Black Dog" so i suppose im looking for songs a bit harder than those.

make sure this course isnt specifying genre... at my school you will automatically fail if you play rush, you MUST play jazz standards.

Your asking the wrong people who are you auditioning for what type of thing is it a school, a show, a band, what style and so on. What are they looking for reading, improv, interpretation of the song, groove, and etc. So some situations will say what they are looking for. Others you can find others who have auditioned and see what they did. Last the answers to the questions above should guide you in picking songs.

it doesnt specify genre all you need is to have passed 5 gcses (Exams you take at 16) and to play to play to an acceptable standard.

i dont think a rush song is really a good idea..

i learned continuum by jaco, with his solo and everything, note for note. sure, its a lot of work, but to be honest, if you have an audition piece like that its rare for someone not to call you back.

my 2 cents..

if they used the word "standard" then I really feel they want jazz. regardless jazz is probably more impressive than rock anyway.

jsingles - you're the one that said "standard" - after that he said "TO an acceptable standard," which is somewhat different.

Isn't it a little late to be auditioning for courses in college? They usually have those in mid-spring for fall. Anyways, they're going to want you to probably play at least two prepared pieces of contrasting styles. And for ****'s sake, don't play Rush!!! They are most likely looking to see if you have the technical skills to play at a collegiate level. They're not so much wanting you to dazzle them with chops.

Also, keep your sight-reading sharp. And practice scales. Major and minors.
