right on! agreed = chord formulas and arpeggios!

you can also do modes of the melodic minor and harmonic minor as well ...they have seven modes and seven chords as well but it's tough to find use for em if you're not playing Jazz (melodic minor modes) or classical ( harmonic minor stuff)

a favorite mode for jazz players is lydian dominant = 4th mode of melodic minor!

other things you can do is take the theory inside your head!!! learn to sing modes, arpeggios etc ....ear trainging is what i'm getting at not voice lessons LOL ......work on your relative pitch recognition with interval training !

OK you know how to make modes, next is how to use them.

This may help. http://www.ibreathemusic.com/forums/...732#post142732

Read post # 7 first.
Then go to the first post and read them all. Probably one of the better how to use modes strings I've seen in a long time.

Probably the most important thing to come out of this string is; "You need to understand keys, chords and melody before you can possibly understand modes. Once you understand keys, chords & melody you will finds modes to be so simple as to be hardly worth mentioning".

Your other question - understanding theory. IMHO best way to understand theory is done in an easy chair with a book (or paper) on theory and a scale and key chart handy. An inexpensive keyboard is an excellent way to "see" theory.

IMHO - Theory is best studied by itself an extra 30 minutes before or after your normal practice schedule. When is unimportant 30 minutes some time each day is the important factor. If it relates to what your practicing right now so much the better.

Wealth of information here. http://www.ibreathemusic.com/browse/index.php?ltr=A Print one off and find an easy chair. Most of these articles will have a button at the end of the lesson that will take you to "the rest of the story", be sure and take advantage of that button.

Have fun.

I don't know if I don't get modes, but I just never use them. I just know how the intervals sound and how they apply to the key and to the chords, so I just play intervals that will sound good, without thinking about modes.

Do you know the concept of modal harmony/modal keys? Can you write music in modal keys? If not, you don't have the modes down.

Because of rather inadequate 'lessons' regarding modes going around on the int3rwebz, their harmonic function has been grossly ignored, while the linear function is overemphasized.

From the thread that MalcolmAmos linked to:
Quote:
when we think of "D dorian mode", associating it with C major is potentially misleading
This statement hits the nail on the head. As modes have been described primarily as being derivatives of the major scale in various 'lessons', their individuality, esp. in the harmonic sense is lost on many youngsters who learn modes through lessons on the internet.

Very good point. We only needs modes when we are playing over a modal vamp. How often do we play over a modal vamp? In my case not very often......

sounds like you already know enough about modes.
If you don't yet understand this:
-------
I maj7
ii min7
iii min7
IV maj7
V7
vi min7
vii min7b5
---------
then stop worrying about modes:
Learn to harmonize the major scale
Learn what cadences are
Learn how common chord progressions work.
Learn to play in support of the chords :this is by far the most common task a bass player will have.
Understanding chords and chord progressions will help.
