what are some good rock bass songs?

Sign in to disble this ad
my teacher suggested that I bring him a CD of some rock songs with bass parts that I like, so that way I can learn the songs, but also learn about how the artists came up with the basslines and learn some theory and stuff from it.

So, I'm at a loss of what songs to put. Besides The Beatles, I can't think of any other good rock bands with nice bass parts. Maybe some RHCP? And I like 311's bass player, but he uses a 5 string.

Any suggestions?

"Zombie" by The Cranberries,
or the remade version by Miser.

Its a great bassline, very dynamic, sounds amazing, yet amazingly simple once you get the tempo and changes down.

Let me know if you want to tab...

Well, none of us can tell you what YOU like and it's hard to determine from here if you like "riff-rock" or more of a steady bass line as in (for example) U2.

I think a good "riff-rock" song to learn for a beginner (??), would be Mr. Brownstone, by Gun-N-Roses. It's a pretty swift-moving song with an ample amount of explainable theory behind it.

As always, you can never go wrong with some tasty John Paul Jones tunes (Led Zepplin). He has a great grasp on blues bass structures.

Good Luck.

rock licks

I've always been partial to Six Going On Seven and the lines played by Josh English. He's unique to me and it's not terribly difficult. I admittedly emulate his tone and his style. I believe his band and personal pages are on myspace but finding a CD can be difficult at times. I believe the band used to be on Doghouse Records.

Anything by Rush, especially the longer, harder stuff, like Hemispheres, Xanadu, or YYZ. Guaranteed to make you a better player. Go slow at first, don't worry about mistakes, take your time, and watch your playing improve dramatically. Worked for me!

I've always thought Muse put together some really nice bass lines.

Learn songs that you already know the tune more or less. That way you can concentrate on learning the bass lines, and not learning the whole song from scratch. I recommend that you learn to play songs from artists that you really like, not random suggestions from strangers... not that these would be bad suggestions, but pick songs you know. If you have to learn how a Rush song goes, AND the bass line too, it's more work for you. What kind of music do you like?

You can't think of any rock songs that have interesting bass lines? Then you haven't listened enough.

Who are your 20 favorite groups?

RATM, lots of the lines are simple and sound real crunchy. Though by all means, rock music is only going ot help you so far! Get into some greasy finger funk as soon as possible.

"What's the Frequency Kenneth" by REM. There's a decent Youtube of a guy doing it. Once you have the changes, you can play around with the fills and syncopation. It rocks.

You should pick.

Nobody should decide for you, but i like the bass lines by Mark Stoemer. He plays for The Killers. Check out some of their stuff.

some older cool bass tunes are..

We're An American Band.. Grand Funk
RIO .. Duran Duran
anything by YES and Rush and E.L.P.

newer stuff.. Stone Temple Pilots have some Kickin' bass tracks...
Plush is a fun riff...
Trippin On A Hole In A Paper Heart.. awesome.
Sour Girl... is just fantastic.

All the ideas in previous posts are very cool as well.
