Favorite tune or bassline? Sometimes its hard to tell the difference.. Darling Dear is my fav. bass work, but the tune itself is not.

I Heard It Through The Grapvine - not the famous Four Tops version but the earlier Gladys Knight track. Jaw dropping stuff.

The 14 year old tried out last summer for Stairway to Stardom (teen battle of the band stuff) with "Ain't no mountain high enough". Got him into 2 bands. Of course, the final product was not Motown related.

I would have to say that the JJ song that got me thinking about bass was "It's the Same Old Song" by the Four Tops. It's not subtle and muscles its way into the mainstream sound of the song. To me, that's the signature Jamerson sound. Perhaps not his "best" work but the song I love the most.

If I ever have trouble getting the timing right on a Jamerson song, I play it with one finger. Then I get the timing and can translate it to my two-fingered playing.

Darling Dear by the Jackson 5. The only thing it suffers from is that some youtube viddies cite it as the best bassline ever. Despite that, it might be.

Oh, and it's the Jackson 5. Surprisingly good, actually. Reminds me of eating corn flakes with sugar on them when I was 8.

Why do you have to translate it to two fingers? IMHO if you can play them with one finger like Jamerson it's good... it sounds better like that, the way it should be

For me it's a 3 way tie, I Was Made to Love her, Bernadette and For Once in my Life.

Only now do I realize how much my mom listening to the oldies station really affected me. I can go years without listening to these songs and still sing the basslines. Perfection.
