Lightbulb Where do I go from here?

Hi all,

I have been playing bass for several years now, and this year it started getting really serious for me (you know the symptoms, urge to play everyday, missing my beat-up bass and ofcourse, GAS). However, I feel I can do more. I can play a lot of rock, all learned from tab. I can tell you which note is which in the bass clef, yet I cannot sight-read. I have also discovered I LOVE jazz. Mostly marcus miller, but also alot of different stuff.

Anyway, I want more. I want to be able to sight-read, learn songs by ear and transcribe. I want to know the scales and their modes. I want to know what a mode is....

To achieve bass-playing greatness, I want to learn jazz.

My question for the TB'ers: Where do I go from here?

Peace

Just a suggestion here. I would look at a few reputable teachers in your area and sit down with them and go over what you would like to accomplish. They may ask you to play for them to get a feel for your level of playing skill, but they can bet steer you in the correct direction. It's difficult for adults to learn how to site read. Our brains are so full of the things we learned and are no longer the sponges they were when we were kids and do not pick up as fast. The second line of reasoning for looking into a good teacher is. With the years you have under your belt, its hard to break some deep well routed habbits and you may find yourself reverting back. A good teacher can help overcome this.

Just a thought.
