Where to start?

Hello I'm new. Anyway, I've had the passion to play the bass for some time now, but I don't know where to start. The only former experience I've had was playing a trumpet for 2 semesters in school. I've been told by friends to start with the acoustic guitar, others have said to simply jump straight into bass, and few have even said to start with an electric guitar so I'd already have amp. Please, could anybody help me figure out where to start?

First, go through the big threads here and read some of the sticky topics.

Then, find a user named "Stumbo", click on the link in his signature, and read through some the pages you find there.

Finally, ask questions, and try to find a teacher.

Start with bass. The first thing you need is a bass. Although I'm not personally a fender guy (personal thing, nothing against their axes), I'd say try to pick up a Squier or another DECENT entry level bass, and maybe a practice amp. You won't be playing with people for a little bit so look on Craigslist for the amp. Feel free to buy used so you don't spend a bunch of money on an instrument you're aspiring to play. You might not like it (as much as I hate to say it). You came here saying you wanted to play bass. If you came here trying to play an acoustic guitar, that's what you should play. Try out a few entry level basses like the Squiers or maybe cheap Ibanez Soundgear, or even Peavey basses made in the USA. They're all great starter basses, and the Peavey's are usually even better than that. I play my G-Bass (Peavey) all the time, and love the sound I get out of it even after playing for awhile. After that get a teacher and some books. Most of all have fun with it! Good luck to you, and always feel free to ask questions. You don't learn if you don't ask.

Also, rondomusic.com has cheap starter kits for bass, and I hear a lot of good things about their instruments. If I could do it again, I'd get one of those to start out. Read a lot of stuff on here in the technique and general info sections, use the search, FIND A TEACHER, and practice like there's no tomorrow.

I have the SX starter kit. I'm happy with it. Bass, practice amp, strap, cable, tuner. DVD too, but I haven't looked at it, since I started out with a teacher.
