I get down on myself because I don't really know the names of modes and different chords structures and whatnot, but then watching his instructional vids, he's pretty much in the same boat I'm in, he just figured out how to use what little music theory he knows to it's full extent.
So in essense, Billy Sheehan is a minimalist, hehe.

A: No.
Not even close.

If you can get past the hair and noodling, the lessons itself is pretty interesting. How he uses held positions to make his lines, how he turns the lowest notes of scale patterns into chords, this is usable stuff.
Much better than most interviews where the topic is the last brand of strings the guy endorses. |

Interesting to watch if you like Billy, but if you really want to learn something about scales and chords...imo its useless. I really really expect way more than this from one of the leading bass players of this planet. |

David Lee Roths - 'Eat 'Em and Smile' was one of the best educations in - solid but with flair - rock bass I've ever had, each to their own I suppose, there are lot's of mode tuition articles around. That's me ; ) |

He must have had a lot of, um, coffee, before he filmed it or something.

Unfortunately for rockers back in the 80's that was the hair style. Billy rocks like crazy, any bass player should be able to learn and ample amount of interesting things just by watching him play anything at all.
