Guys.

You have to hear this; so I'm a noob bassist, right? I literally know next to nothing about the instument yet. Today I take Sebastian (uh... I pronouce 'bass' with an emphasis on the 'a' like you do in the word 'basketball'.) to Fuzztone Music and hand 'er over to the guy there (very cool guy - the kind you expect a stereotype music store owner to be) and he sort of looks at me funny, as if I'm completely retarded and says.

"You're right, the action is pretty high. Come back at noon - I'll start on her right away."

So I go to the grocery store and buy 100 grams of roast beef and a really terrible crusty bun, some grapes and an iced tead and nom in the parking lot to while away the time.

I get back just as he's finishing up and he hooks her up, playing a few beats to make sure he got everything right.

"Try it out." He says to me, handing me back my instrument.

And guys... it's like... everything has just been made so much easier. I can slap now. Couldn't before. My fretting hand endurance is made a thousand times what it was. It's amazing what a difference a quarter inch can make.

You pronounce bass like bass the fish not like bass the instrument?

I find your ideas intriguing and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

You could try to repeat this experience of making things so much easier, for example if you start tot learn to read music.

I don't go anywhere without Barbara Warram's Elementary Rudiments of Music.

Being a noob does not mean I am dispassionate. I don't see the point of staying a tabtard all my life.

... which by no means I intended to imply...

This thread shows an important problem playing (and especially starting on) a musical instrument, i.e. the balance between your specific technical problems and gear or setup imperfection. Often you don't know what to blame. The recommendation is always the same: find a teacher.

It is very important to adopt an uncomprimising attitude. If you strife for perfection in the beginning, you will be rewarded manyfold.

I apologize for misreading your implications. I find that it's hard not to be defensive on strange internet forums. For the record - I think you have a good attitude, and look forward to taking your advice to heart. I can't think of anything better than learning to play music.
