Your latest achievement.

On the path to becoming better at bass everyone has small victories that continue to motivate them by showing them that they're improving.

What has been yours lately?

Today I got down playing all of the notes and rhythms of Come On Come Over very slowly, now to just practice a little faster and build up to normal speed.

I've learned about half of "What's Going On". We used to play it but I really sucked so we quit. We played it last night and I new enough to make it sound half way decent. Still a work in progress, but definitely an accomplishment.

Learned Oh! Darling by the beatles.

Even though it isn't that difficult technically, it made me appreciate the beauty of good bass playing so much more and it is now officially my favorite song to play.

Oh and it's also the first song I learn where I payed attention to the chord progression and how the bass line follows it instead of just learning the tab.

Paul's too good!

All of my right thumb techniques (slap, double/triple/quadruple thumb) improved to such a level where I can use them spontaneously in rehearsal settings. It took me a long time since I do my stuff on fretless 5, flatwounds close to the deck. Soon to bee seen on stage as well, I hope.

Got the first page of the first exercise in Mike Richmond's "Modern Walking Bass Technique". This is an awesome book.

Finally have RHCP's Coffee Shop nailed. Have the right settings dialed in on the filter for the first solo and have found the combination sweet spot and finger strength to get the over-played tone of the second. I'm happy. There's a lot more to it than it appears at first, the thing is lousy with ghost notes and palm muting.

Now I just need to find someone willing to play it.

Since last March, when I joined the band, I've worked out and played all the bass lines for nine original Christian Contemporary songs which our singer-songwriter wrote. I'm rather proud of myself since I've only been playing bass for about four years now. But since I've been playing guitar since 1972, I guess I'm not completely devoid of musical knowledge!

Wrote a somewhat decent riff, and have trained myself to listen to all the instruments in the mix as well as the rythm and how to effectivily listen to the bass riffs. I'm currently tying to match notes from "panic switch" by the silver sun pickups by ear and by watching the hand movements of the bassist in the video.

i learned a new stunt on the upright...laying down with the body on my chest, i pluck the strings and use my foot on the neck to change the pitch. looks cool as all getout, but getting out of it gracefully and quickly is still a bit of a challenge.

I just can't imagine that looking cool. Do you play for a rockabilly band or something? (That's the only situation in which I've seen some use "stunts on the upright"
