Your Wooten Endeavors

I caught a glimpse of my 'Best of Victor Wooten' book last night and pulled it off the shelf, then listened to 'A show of hands.' It just reminded me of how great a musician he is. Got me wanting to play more of his stuff again.

Seeing as how his tunes are 'unusual,' which Wooten tunes have you fellow talkbassers taken upon yourself to learn to the best of your ability, and then perform it? We're talking thourough, here.

I've played 'The Vision' for my end of year jury a few semesters ago, and have learned 'Amazing Grace' and 'More Love' in the past as well.

You?

I attempted Norwegian Wood a bit ago. Let's put it this way... Slap & Tap™ is not my thing.

Blu Bop and Sinister Minister. Got Blu Bop pretty well, never got Sinister Minister solo section but I could play the rest of it. But I soon decided that as great as it is, playing like Victor Wooten isn't going to be what keeps me working, so now I just concentrate on doing what I do and just try to be a better version of myself. But I still dig bass pyrotechnics in the right context, and one thing you can say about Vic is he always takes his context into consideration.

i have transcribed a number (i think i am up to 10 or 11) of his finger style solos. That man has some serious soul.

I know what you mean about 'playing like vic isn't going to keep me working.' But his solo bassing aside, he's a great supporting role as well. I saw him on some jazz studio show where they get a group of people to play and record tunes over a few days, and it was cool seeing him in that context.

If you're not being sarcastic, yes, I can play his Amazing Grace, but the other two songs I listed, in my opinion, are much more demanding and intricate to play, especially 'The Vision.'

And 'More Love' is just....rad. Once you get the coordination, it's under the belt.
