While we are on the subject of supporting members, I am but my feedback score stopped appearing. How can I get it back? And is it ok to ask for feedback from the other party in a sale?

I always make sure to talk on the phone with someone before a trade, buy or sale. A good majority of people on here also have a facebook page. Get their name, not user name, and do a little check over on fb to see if they are a real person and located where they say they are. I have had a few guys on here do that with me and ended up adding me as a friend and chat with them on fb too. Nothing wrong with doing a background check yourself or at least talking with the person on the phone.

I don't mind selling to someone with 0 feedback, but you better believe I'm going to check up on whether or not their active on the rest of the forums.

I had a possible (probable) scam attempted about a year ago. The person sent me the PayPal and had I not looked closely at the address I would have missed the bottom of the address. Something like (made up, of course):

Tommy Tom
1234 W. Central St
New York, NY 12345
China

So, I just refunded the money and told him "No thanks". Did a Google StreetView on the address and it was a vacant looking business in the middle of nowhere.

I didn't report it because technically I was the one that backed out of the deal. I'm pretty sure that the PayPal would have been reversed on me later.

Checking for activity and participation in the forums is your only defense- it means they care about their reputation here and that will be your lever to get them to deal fairly. Checking out their purported identity through other means, FB, etc., is a great idea too.

I think the best way to deal with someone who has no feedback or any real history here is to get as much info from them as you can ie. facebbook account and such. What about skypeing the person ? Having them on skype and asking to see there I.D right there on the spot.. I`m new to TB but was lucky enough to fall in with some great TBers also lucky enough to have them trust me but we spoke on the phone many times before a transaction was made. Ask them there house color and then google map their house. You can go virtually anywhere in the world and look into someones house window. There are so many ways to make the transaction feel more comfortable. If your trading with someone new have them send you their item first so they can get that good feedback rating. I think that 99.9999% of the TB community are great people, once we start getting overly paranoid and stop trusting this will fall apart. Just a few thoughts from the new guy

We where all 0/0 TBers at one time. When I did my first trade it was cross country for a bass. Both valued over $1500. Providing info like phone # and other stuff will help build credibility when making a deal. Communication is key. If you talk and build a little trust a lot of guys, like myself, will give other TBers the benefit of the doubt and give them a chance regardless of having no feedback yet.

whenever you have a situation like this, and you are contacted by someone who seems odd, please contact one of the admins via pm so we can investigate.

making a thread is fine, but if someone's a scam artist, i'd rather ban them.

Y'damn right be aware

Thank you TB community. I'm a sucka for a passionate plea and it almost failed me...er, I almost failed m'self. I appreciate those with experience with bad issues that replied with a quickness to my situation. You never know who you're dealing with. The guy/gal can be a pastor, can show pics of family, can seem "true enough" the bottom line is you don't know who's on here unless you literally know them. It's a damn sad shame. I'm still realing from the issues from a payment I paid back in Dec 22, 2012. Do I have the instrument or the money? Nope! Have I made a claim? Heck yes! My dumb ass didn't know the cut off was 45 days for paypal to intervene. And I intervened at 44 days. How crazy is that?!

It's the mistakes you make that educate you on what to do in the future. Keep the bad news coming because it helps uninformed and trusting individuals make rational decisions.

End result is this guy has to deal with the repercussions of paypal despite the fact I tried to do the right thing. Some one else's "situation(s)" should not be the destraction. And they can be good at outlining how they've tried to rectify it in the interim but to "no avail". This guy was all about "his word" and I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt...However, protect y'damn self so you don't have to get the shaft. Just sayin'.

Thanks again TB community, if I waited A DAY longer I would'a been screwed.
