Maybe there could be some type of system only Mods could see, and after too many violations, they put "FLAKE" in red across your avitar
keep it reserved for some one who has never made a single purchase on TB but has sent 36 PM's asking what a Bass weighs, or pulls back from 8 sales because their cat died.

And straight shooters sometimes have legitimate reasons. I had a paypal transaction go sideways a few years ago when the seller had a stroke. So how do you tell the difference between an excuse and a reason? You can't always.

Nobody so far seems to be able to define a set of criteria by which a feedback system could function smoothly and fairly without dumping a bunch of extra arbitration (that really isn't their mandate) onto the moderators. And something no one has mentioned is that it would have to be a two way street with the potential buyer being able to leave you reciprocal feedback. You really wanna go there? Sounds way more messy than it's worth.

Anyway it's all academic. Something this potentially unfair that would create as much extra work for the mods as it undoubtedly would is never going to get the OK from Paul.

I think it's always somewhat a "case by case" situation whenever you sell something privately. I'm a believer in "first with the cash gets it" whenever there isn't an agreed upon delay and even then it has to be within reason. "I won't have the money until a week from Tuesday" isn't within reason unless a deposit is offered and accepted.

If I'm buying the PayPal payment is made immediately if I've anticipated the purchase or within 24 hours if not and I need to transfer funds. The same with a money order or cashiers check. If I can't do either of those I don't speak up for something. That's unfair to the seller.

I had a guy call me on a Friday on an amp I was selling and said he couldn't get by to see it until Sunday. I said fine but that I would not hold it until then if someone offered my price on Saturday. And of course he never showed up or even bothered to call. Flake!

No verbal agreement is valid without consideration. If I went the local music store or pawn shop and asked them to hold something for me then I'd have to give them a deposit or a down payment or they're not gonna hold it. If it works for them why should I do it differently?

Instead of putting "On hold pending payment" on an item I started putting "On hold for XXXX pending payment" in the thread. Then if they flake out I can just put "Buyer backed out". When they pay I can delete the "On hold" post. I only do this for people that don't pay right away. Most do.
