I think the more you know about any 'thing' the better you will do that 'thing'.
If you write speeches for a living knowing more grammar will never hurt you. It will only help you. But knowing less grammar can get you fired.

For every chord that exist there's a pool of information that pertains to that chord. The better you know and the more you know about that pool of information the better you can 'outline' that chord.
