not so old school - Sublime - maybe not funk but funky
contemporary - check out Tal Wilkenfield w/ Jeff Beck (and whoever happens to be on drums.) IMO, more funk than jazz. |

Slide is hot as well, and while I don't know what a STONE JAM is, it seems to be the SLAVE tune that moves me musically, as Nobody Can Be You does lyrically.
OP, check out the Funk 101, 102 threads in the "recordings" forum. Dudes like EBOZZ are throwing some great stuff out there. In fact, I have to thank Charles (ebozz) AGAIN, for sharing his funk.
I dont know how your drummer will feel about it, and I wasnt much of a Jackson Five fan as a kid ( Sabbath, Zepplin, ZZtop, Steely Dan - yes I WAS WHITE as a kid!), but I've spent the last week working on Darling Dear. I mean, it isnt FUNK, but o'Lord, that man had a gift, a beautiful gift, and I am learning some from following his footsteps.
What I do with the drummer sometimes is sort of jot some changes down and yell out " Yo, play what you feel like right now!" and let Mother Music work her charm!
