Here's what I do. Try it and see, it might work for you too.
With your right hand, pluck one of the strings (usually 4) to produce sound. Then with your left hand, apply downward pressure on the string at intervals to change the pitch. I employ a combination of up to several plucks and string length modifications (or notes) to create what I call "a solo".
I think he's saying ask these questions:
1. What are the changes?
2. What scales sound good over these changes?
3. What arpeggios sound good over these changes?
4. Which transition notes sound the best?
5. How will I structure my solo?
As a drummer I only had to focus on number 5. LOL
