wow, that's a really advanced audition for high school. I'd love to hear your band. I teach private lessons and would like to show some of my students a high school band at that level.

Hehe...jealous much?

...I think the rest of us are! I performed admirably from middle school to college working off of only one major scale and one minor scale fingering. Thanks Mr. Hunt (really!)!

To be honest, It's nice to see that there are more than a handful of schools in North America with a student body capable of performing jazz at a rudimentary level. Any high school band director that actually requires their jazz band to improvise is noteworthy and should be praised...regardless of the fact that their budget is ([probably, most definitely) gargantuan when compared to other public schools. Last I recall, your average public school "jazz" band contain no improvisation at all.

I hope and pray that kids from schools like zepplinfreak's CAN back it up with their playing. What a wonderful prospect.

Matt

I'm not sure about that one. In my area all 8 or 9 of the jazz bands from the high schools, have decent amounts improv. Even at my school where our big band is 65 players we get some improv. Generally it falls on seniors and juniors to improv, and then the underclassmen get some parts at the end of the year.

Well I did my audition. D maj for the bee bop scales got a little funky (not in a good way) but other then that, the audition was flawless. (my definition of flawless just means no mistakes, not necessarily good)

And I made it back into the top band. So thank you to those of you who posted advice, and Ill probably be back here next year
