Basic question

I've played UB for about 10 months and never had a lesson, stupid I know. Fortunatley I'll be starting college studying jazz in Feb. Until then my bass lecture to be has given me some pages of exercises to work on over the Xmas break.

What are the numbers under the stave under each note?
Where is 1st position, 2nd position, half position etc?

So far I've used pointer, middle, and pinky to cover 3 semitones - ring finger doesn't see much action until I move my hand beyond the heel. Is this ok?

I think you picked the most difficult instrument to try and learn on your own. I would strongly suggest a teacher and maybe try picking up the Simandl book ASAP and that could help you with the questions you have. Good luck and welcome to the club.

You can download fingering charts at many places on the web - like here :
