Can you use these etudes if you use the 4-finger technique and play Double Bass...

tuned in 5ths?

Libon: 12 Studies for String Bass (Stuart Sankey) International Music

Rabbath: Nouvelle Technique de La Contrebass Book 2, Editions Musicales Alphonse Leduc

I want to know if all the etudes in those books are playable on a double bass tuned in 5ths using the 4-finger system with fingering changes (Do they exploit the 4ths tuning making it impossible?).

I've only played one of thre libon etudes and I imagine it would probably be tricky in fifths. The Rabbath etudes are used to teach Rabbath's system of positions so many of the etudes would probably loose their purpose in fifths tuning. Not to say that it wouldn't necesarily be useful , but I imagine it wouldn't work as well.

I bet my bottom dollar that there are plenty of cello etudes that are feasible on the bass (keeping the the thicker strings and larger string length of a bass in mind).
Since we are on the same proverbial boat of fifths, I will let you know if I find any etudes of interest!

Until Mr. Quarrington comes out with that series of method books about fifths that he has been promising to publish for years and years, we will have to do our best with the cello stuff.

Best,
Alex

Hold the phone! The reason you use open hand (4 finger) and closed hand (124 or Simandl) w/pivoting, and the thumb positions (above and below the octave) while tuned in 4ths or 5ths or whatever - is to have the various skills that will meet all your musical challenges - etudes, symphonies, blah, blah, blah.
You can't design a technique or tuning to meet a need of a set of etudes and change when the musical challenge changes. One complete set of skills will meet ALL!
I quit....

Well the reason why I want to know if I can play them on a bass tuned in 5ths is because those etudes are what the people at TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association) use for auditioning for Region, Area, and All-State.
