Electric to upright blog

Hey guys. There's always lots of posts on switching to upright. A lot have been from me over the years I've lurked in the dark on this forum. (I've been here awhile but I read more then post)

I've started a blog on my musical journey, and if anyone likes read advice and stories helpful to developing bassists/musicians (especially guys just learning double) then you might be interested in checking it out. Now.. I'm not going to be giving tons of advice, but I might post advice given to me and stories that you could benefit from and maybe some good discussions can get started.

I don't think this is exactly against the rules, but if it is can a moderator PM and I'll take care of it. Just trying to communicate with the world you know! And then eventually try and market myself.

You could blog about how much of a bitch learning to play arco is. I started taking upright lessons this semester to compliment my electric playing, and bowing has definitely given me its fare share of hell.

And nice choice of college. I almost went to BGSU, but chose NKU instead.

This is a great idea, ding. It may serve some of us older guys well to remember that everyone was a beginner at one point.

Yeah the teacher there is kind of great.. the music program is huge and pretty good, but the jazz program is a small part of it, but most of the guys feel proud to be in it.

Whats NKU?

A little constructive criticism: I read it, but had a hard time getting into any of the posts. A lot of the content is your personal aspirations, which (no offense) are only likely to be interesting to someone who already knows you, and is interested in your aspirations.

My suggestion would be to include more detail. If you go into the minutiae of why the process has been hard (what hurts, what slips you up, what has gotten easier, anecdotes of advice, disasters, embarrassing moments), not only will you be providing information that is more universally interesting and useful, but you will be helping us to identify with your character, and become more invested in your adventures.... :-)

Northen Kentucky University. It's a little smaller than BGSU, and has a smaller jazz program than classical (I'm actually there for classical piano), but the faculty is great.

Yeah BGSU has a big music program but the jazz program is fairly small.. but like your school.. The faculty are some tight players.

Isn't that what a blog is for? But you are right I probably should include more details in some of my posts to generate more interest.

A few articles

Hey man, I was in your same shoes about 5 years ago. Everyone was telling me how I should switch to the upright.

Anyway, I'm totally into the upright more than ever these days. I have a blog too (see my signature for a link) as I enjoy writing articles for it. If I can save someone else some of the frustration of figuring something out, I'm all for it!

I'm also planning on posting all my transcriptions for free. I've got two up now, about a dozen more I need to scan, a few I did back in the day that need to get checked for accuracy, and I'm working on a few more new ones at the moment.

Blogger is kind of a drag to organize stuff, but eventually I want to set up a website that's a free resource for everyone to use.
