FINGERING TO DO A 2 NOTE RUN UP TO A LOWER NOTE

I want to walk from d to A with only 3 counts ; i have trouble starting; which finger do i need to start with it seems that if I start with my index finger I am always a half step behind

What string are you starting on? Why can't you go from D (A string 5th fret) to F ( D string 3rd fret) To A (G string 2nd fret).. Root, 3rd and 5 of the D chord.

edit: Sorry you want a lower note.

D (A string 5th fret) To F (A string 8th fret) to A (E string 5th fret) ... all in 5th position.
