So today I had my first lesson ever. I borrowed an upright bass over the summer from my school so I'm trying to learn as much as possible before the school year starts.
I want to ask if this teacher was getting me headed in the right direction or not (I'm a complete noob at upright bass but I've played guitar and electric bass for a while).
He first told me to make sure I'm not holding up the bass with my hands, and to kinda lean it in towards me and put my back leg behind it a little bit. Not being too specific about the position.
Then he proceeded to ask me if I know some scales. I said Yes and he then had me play an F Major scale. The one thing I didn't like was the fact that he told me to play with only my index, middle, and ring/pinky put together. I don't see why that's necessary when I can already stretch my hand far enough and easily play with all 4 fingers seperately.
One other thing that bothered me was he didn't pay attention to my left hand. Absolutely no comment on it. And I'm pretty sure I didn't get it right the first time haha.
After that, he showed me how to hold the bow, and how to play with the bow. Again not being too specific about playing and it sounded like crap when I did it. The only tip he gave me was to play closer to the bridge on higher notes.
With the ****ty bowing aside, he then handed me some simple open string bowing exercises, telling me about how he uses this book with most of his students. Does Edouard Nanny ring a bell with anyone here? And is it the right book for me?
Anyways, that was the whole lesson right there. Should I stay with him? Or go to a different teacher? I'm just really concerned about getting my technique right in the beginning.
