Lightbulb Greetings - new poster

Hey,

I'm brand new to TB so forgive me if I don't know the etiquette.

My name is John, I'm a pro bassist and teacher out of Charlotte, NC. You name it I've done it, pretty much. In the "good old days" not too long ago, I was playing 3-5 nights a week. Now? not so much...

I primarily play Jazz, blues, and experimental stuff on electric and upright these days. You can check out my stuff on my website - just add a ".com" to my username.

I mostly post on Usenet at alt.guitar.bass, but with so many ISPs getting rid of Usenet posting, I figured I'd give this place a shot.

I have a degree in electric bass performance and one in theory. I'd be happy to answer any questions anybody has on theory, Jazz, or "the life" in general.

Thanks.

Welcome aboard, John. Good to see another theory degree around - makes me feel like less of a nerd. Take your shoes off and sit a spell.

Hi there - nice to see somebody who fills out their profile - a quick question - what bass do you use when you play in the Symphony...or classical in general?

Will do. I actually bought my Kay upright from Ronnie. How do you know him? Does he post on here?

Funny you should mention that. Whenever I play with the Symphony, I usually wind up playing ELECTRIC bass, but I sit in the bass section. Weird? Yes, but this is all per their request.

It's usually for a "Jazz at the Symphony" thing where they need more "drive" to the walking lines (I guess) , or something like a Pops concert where they need rock or funk bass.

They periodically call me for other "jazz" things that require a quartet with upright up front - say for a vocalist. Those are usually "first to call in gets it" deals, which I keep narrowly missing. I believe the aforementioned Mr. Brendle gets a lot of these.

Anyway, this is a long winded way of telling out that I don't have a classical bone in my body, but I can read well. And I own a nice old Kay that I play French.

I can finally put my expertise in Schenkerian Tonal Analysis to good use... Because it sure doesn't make those Big Macs cook any faster...

He has on occasion posted here. Ron and I know each other from the Charlie Haden masterclass at Atlantic Center for the Arts, back in '84. He's played with a few people I know over the years.

Those two sentences almost amount to "heresy"...

Interesting to hear about though and I suppose, potentially you could drown out a whole section !! That would make you popular....

Yeah, he's told me stories about that. Sounds like it was a killer experience.

I know he does a lot of work with pianists Frank Kimbrough and Bill Gerhardt - guys from here who are active in NYC. Both are monster players.

We travel indifferent circles though, so I don't get to see him much.

Yeah, Bill plays up here with a drummer I work with a lot, Jeff Brillinger. Jeff has gotten down to Asheville a few times to play...

Ashville is a great town. Can't make much money playing there, but it's very cool and creative - kind of like a very mini-sized SF. Bill is kind of the point man for the jazz activity going on up there these days.

Last year I booked Bill on a session I was producing and playing on for a young singer. We did my jazz arrangement of Nirvana's "Lithium" and man, he just tore it up.
