Here's That Rainy Day

I'm wondering how many play this tune starting on a minor chord with a decending bassline ala Stan Getz vs. starting on a major chord and going up a minor 3rd, etc.

I always thought the latter was the right way to play this tune, then I heard the Getz version and it turns out the real book changes were "right" for his version.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Yea, I know what you're saying. The new real book 1 (legal one) starts major and goes up a minor third. We've been playing a version starting on major for the first 16 and then starting on minor for the next 16. I can't give you a reference for that one.

In my neck of the woods, what any Real Book says is gospel, so when the tune gets called, it's generally the second version.

Most of my favorite players use Stans changes.

You should think a bit more about that statement....

Huh?

...and what about when one real book edition contradicts another?

i play it starting major and then going up a minor 3rd. i think it really give a nice character to the tune an especially when soloing over it i like to play the 1st bar likes its a minor over the major, gives a real nice sound when it resolves up to the minor 3rd

Then there's a theological argument between the owners of the contradicting fake books!

But yeah, what I said wasn't clear at all, my bad. I just meant that people are very parochial with their fake books around here. Many people have the Sher books, and if someone calls Here's That Rainy Day and you ask which version, you'll probably get some dirty looks because they think that the New Real Book changes are always better than any other version. There are also some dissenters who only swear by the old real book, mistakes and all, but they're outnumbered.

It's the kind of thing that makes me glad that I gave away all my fake books years ago. Sometimes I get the impression that nobody ever LISTENS...
