IMC Jazz Camp

Hey everybody, I just got back from IMC jazz camp, and I had an amazing time. There were 7 bassists in all, we all took a masterclass each day with Jim Vivian, and then we worked in a combo and a big band, and jammed the rest of the night. I got to play with some really telented drummers, pianists, and saxophonists, and I've really improved a lot in just one week. I can't reccommend it enough for any young jazz bassists in Ontario, it was really fun, and there were lots of opportunities for me to learn from better players.

That looks great. I'll definitely consider it for next summer. How old/what level were the other bassists? (and everyone else at the camp)

We were all about 17, some were a bit older, the youngest of us was 15. I'm going again for sure next year, so I'll hopefully see you there.

I found out about that the day before it started, so it was too late. I wish I could have gone! It's not a big deal though, I'm starting my lessons with Jim Vivian in about 2 weeks, what did you think of him?

I'm 17 too so it should be perfect. How hard is it to get one of the scholarships?

Jim was amazing! Great player, really creative, and a great teacher. He encouraged all of us to try new things, and made the lessons fun and relly easy to understand.
As for the scholarship, I got one through my school, my teacher arranged for it through the Ontario Music Educators Association, and it payed for more than half of the cost for the week. There are also scholarships you can get directly from IMC, but I don't have any experience in that.

Yeah! Have you ever heard him on any recordings? If not, I'd recommend checking out Mike Murley. He's a really cool Canadian saxophonist (who also plays bass reasonably well), with some interesting compositions.

That's funny, there's a bassist around Montreal named Brian Hurley.

I have heard him, and Murley before, though not in the same band haha. Both incredible players. I'm super excited for school to start!

Yeah, he's a really fun teacher - I wonder if he's on TB?

Murley's a tank - when I saw Metalwood a few months back, he put down his sax and comped on the Rhodes while Brad Turner took a trumpet solo.
Insane band.
