On Tuesday nights there are two regular, ongoing jam sessions.

One is at Churchill Grounds, a jazz club in downtown Atlanta, hosted by trumpeter Danny Harper.

The other is at Twain's, a bar in Decatur, just east of Atlanta hosted by trumpeter Joe Grandsen.

The Twain's session, which is a year or so old, seems to have stolen much of the thunder from the Churchill Grounds session.

They both have web sites with more information.

You might also want to check in with a drummer by the name of Jay Norem, he's over on the forum at allaboutjazz.com and lives in Hotlanta....

Cool little 5 points, ATL

Check out the little five points neighborhood. I passed through last year and it had a sort of Greenwich village vibe.

I haven't been in a while, but I assume Wednesday night at Apres Diem still goes on.

If you're visiting from out of town, Twain's is probably your best bet. It's easy to park, there's no cover, the food is pretty good, and there's usually a lot of good musicians there. It's also not a free-for-all with 30 horn players on every tune, and there's lots of other places to go to in the Decatur area. I always liked the Apres Diem session but sometimes no musicians show up. On the plus side, singers almost never show up to Apres Diem

Twain's is 9:00-12:00+ on Tuesdays, Apres Diem is 8:30-11:30 on Wednesday, Churchill Grounds is 9:00-12:00 (I think) on Tuesday. There's another gig on Thursdays at Queen of Sheba that might be a jam session

i agree with tom. twain's is by far the best. plus, you can hear craig shaw, a great local jazz bassist!

i think there is something at the star on thursday's... not sure though.

oh and churchhill on wednesday's is nice. its hosted by justin chesarek a great drummer. its not really an open jam, but if you tell them your a player they should let you set in.

Bumping this to ask if anyone can recommend some good spots for jazz in Savannah GA and surrounding area. I'll be on Tybee Island for a week. We'll have vehicles available but Atlanta would be a bit of a hike.

Stay away from Little Five. It's not a deadly place or anything... but there's really nothing going musically. It's more of a shopping/event type area.
