Jazz question - approaching chromatic changes

Hey guys,

I'm working on the Monk tune epistrophy now and the shifting 1/2 step changes are breaking my b.....brain.

How do you guys approach situations where 2 chords with almost no common tones, in both walking and soloing. It's a little easier walking, but when I try to make a coherent, melodic phrase I get a little jumbled. The changes I'm using, just with the 1st 8 as an example are

l C#7 D7 l C#7 D7 l etc ll

Tri-toning one of the chords for l G7 D7 l or l C#7 G#7 l is nice but it sounds old after a while.

Any other ideas? The obvious answer is just to practice the scales and I already know that.
