One is bebop, the other free. Obvious differences. One has to play changes, one is making them up as he goes. Both insane technique.

I love both of those guys. Dave Holland just kills me no what he's playing. The Rivers trio was one of my favorites of his bands. And the Joe Pass/NHOP duet is probably my favorite of NHOP's stuff as well.

I much prefer dave holland... NHOP might have great technique, but holland plays with emotion, and makes his notes mean something

I'm not worthy to make the distinction. They're both more impressive than I'll ever be, for different reasons. It's an empty exercise.

Still, you're entitled to an opinion. I prefer Dave Holland because he's a great all-around player, and I love his improvisational style.

Those are both great videos, but I think I prefer the Dave
Holland one. Although he loses points for the black turtleneck-avant garde combination...such a cliche

With that mustache he could be in a 70s porn movie ... and make many of the same faces.

I dunno. I don't think an comparison could be made. It's like apples and oranges. There are reasons to love/hate both. IMO, the only thing that matters is whether that music speaks to you or not. I myself, like structure, so Dave Holland's clip is less appealing... but it doesn't mean I didn't like that clip.

Here's another amazing one. It's the great Mike Richmond with Dave Liebman on youtube.

I definitely agree, except that I prefer Holland.

Self 1 Says: "I Love Chops!"
Self 2 Says: "Chops Aren't Everything!"
Self 3 Says: "Why Aren't You 2 Guys Practicing?"

I am big fans of both Dave Holland and NHOP but those videos do not exhibit the things about their playing that I admire. Sure I love seeing those guys shred a fingerboard to pieces and it impresses the heck out of me, but when they use those chops in a lyrical fashion. That's when I'm floored.

Thanks for the links!
Matt

(i like the Holland)

I study with Mike and watching him play like that in lessons blows me away every time. Ridiculous musician, brilliant teacher, and really nice guy.
