NYC - 1/28 -1/29

Hey,

I am going to be staying in NYC (1500 Broadway) and have evenings available on Wednesday and Thursday. Any suggestions for catching some early evening jazz? Is Ed playing anywhere maybe?

Thanks,
Roger

7:30 PM - Jay Leonhart – solo bass show!

At Small's Jazz Club
183 West 10th Street.

Take the 1 train down to the Christopher Street Stop.

It's a great show. I love his work.

What's the story with Smalls?

I used to go there when I lived in NYC '99-03, but after I moved away I heard it was closed down.

Now I see it's open again, and this time they actually serve beverages....

Is it as good or better than before? I remember the jam sessions at about 2-4 am being pretty hot. Still good?

Hey there,

I drop by there about once every two weeks. My friend works as a bartender there and a lot of my friends gig there. It's a great club.

It reopened before I moved to New York. From what I recall, Spike and Lee (haha) made a deal with Mitch to help revive the club. It's quite great. I have no experience with the old Small's but I can say that the jam sessions are pretty great. One of my favorite nights is run by Tim McCall on Fridays.

Great vibe and just really comfortable to hang around.

Thanks. When I went, it was bring your own bottle of wine and a stryofoam cup, and leave smelling like an ashtray whether you smoked or not (but it was worth it). Looks nicer now.

My good friend Josh Breakstone (guitar) will be at Small's tonight with Lisle Atkinson and Elliot Zigmund. I'm confident you'd get more than your money's worth attending. This trio has been playing regularly over the past year and a half so I'm sure there will be some real communication.
