David,

Methinks Jake was being facetious -- leaving unsaid the very thing you picked up on! It's that Canadian subtlety.

I think the trick is to plan questions that no one else can answer. and also be prepared to abandon any ideas or questions you had as they might take you somewhere completely different.
Jeeze you surprised me with that. I guess it makes sense that there would be other Sydney players on here as it is the place to talk bass. Thanks for the tips Sam.

The "record" advice is one of the most important things on all this One Off Lessons. If he gives you a number of exercises that can't be assimilated until some weeks, months or years, you will have the sound (if you could record that in video it would be a lot better). About the "what to ask" I think that is hard to tell you, because each player has a lot of things to ask, but one that always work is "what things do you consider (besides the known by all) that I must pay attention when I'm creating a bass line?"

I studied classical guitar for a while years ago. One day I asked my teacher how he thought I was progressing. He paused for a second and then he said "Well, you're not making as many ugly noises as you used to."
