P.C. Yesterday's Transcription

Hi, i've recently been playing a TON of upright bass and have been wanting to experiment with the use of a bow in jazz (cause i LOVE when PC, mingus, and slam stewart use it, etc.)

To further my technique i REALLY want to learn paul chambers' version of yesterdays:
does anyone have a transcription?

-I know, i should transcribe it, however i really want to concentrate on my right hand technique here more than what notes, etc. so ideally i'd love to just play it from a chart
-I know J.Stinett has a book out, but i'm broke as anything so that can't really happen.

I think you would benefit more from transcribing the solo your self. Your ear is just as important as your right hand technique. If you want to work on right hand technique, I would suggest working on Simandl with your teacher. Or you could play melodies of standards, etudes, or some Bach just to give a few more examples. You can transcribe the solo, while your working on your technique. Once the solo is done, you can put it all together. Working on your ears will not hurt you. It takes a mix of technique and ears to be a balanced musician. Good Luck.

You could also find a real book and do your own interpretation.

i think i'll try to transcribe it, but i'm not sure how well that will go. unfortunately i don't have a teacher for upright bass so i have to teach all of this to myself and so for now i'm trying to get my upright technique up to speed with everything else i know from electric. i'll see what i can do.
thanks

I'd recommend getting a teacher. It's really tough developing proper technique without someone to show you. Mine was absolute garbage before I got a teacher, and I improved ridiculously quickly once I got one.

Oh and I've been meaning to transcribe this song for a while, but haven't had time. Once school's done I might get around to it.

Try transcribing it away from the bass, then write it down. Definitely get a teacher, and once your technique is up to the task, you can use the written transcription as an etude.
