Yeah, I spend a lot of time playing Bach and Bottesini on someone else's bass. YAWN. If you aren't playing classical rep you may never need a dot at all. When I'm playing the second suite at pitch, those little specs of white out are a *lifesaver.*

I just use the different natural marks of the fingerboard to judge distance, although I've gone without it for a long time too.

I can think of one broadway show that came through town which had a couple of very exposed whole notes around 7th position. Amplification & headphones exposed the long notes much more. Everyone in the pit including the conductor can hear every tiny detail with headphones. I put a small wax pencil mark on the harmonic G & the A 1/2 step up just to be sure I'd nail it in those spots to get the passage started. When you are at the mercy of headphones & a sound man I see no reason not to do this for just a few notes.
