Photo in Ron Carter's book

In Ron Carter's book he has what appears to be a strap going around the belly of the bass. This strap then appears to attach to his body somehow, perhaps to his belt, or going around his waist. The photo is not clear enough to tell for sure. What is this strap, and what is it for. For all this beginner knows it could be an essential accessory to support the bass, or maybe just a favourite memento; a scarf or a ribbon. Thanks

It is a bass bib which protects the upper rib from getting scratched by a belt buckle or the like. You are seeing the bottom tie.

Or, for your nice clothes getting shredded by the old wood on the side of the top of your bass.

This is usually it, I thought -- also, you can get narsty shiny spots on a suit if you don't use one.
