Reference points for slab?

Running an hour late for rehearsal, didn't have time to collect my bass from home yesterday, I knew there was a slab up against the wall in the studio though and I thought hey, why not just use that for the rehearsal. I used to play one 20 years ago and haven't touched one since. But it can't be that hard ...

So I plug in, look down and ... hey, where are my reference points? Lots of lines and bits of pearl ... but no reference points! Where's the neck joint? ... oh, way up there ... and which one of those lines is the octave again?

Totally threw me for a while.
