Right hand below finger board.

My bass teacher was telling me about some of Mingus' stuff where he plays right on the edge or below the finger board to get a really bright and gnarley sound. Does anyone know of any albums by Mingus or any other bass player who also uses this technique? I've been experimenting with it and it's pretty cool but i was just wondering who else uses it.

Thumbs up

I had my luthier extend my fingerboard for this very reason. (rather than for the more common reason, to play higher notes).
I find it invaluable to dig in harder and get more of an edge to my pizz tone at times. Because of this, I've dropped the use of the bow because of the stcky rosin issue.
Works great.

There's a video of Ahmad playing Darn That Dream on Youtube where Israel Crosby is playing with the tip of his finger off the end of the fingerboard. I'm pretty sure I've seen Christian McBride do it too.

My thumb is often anchored right at the end with my plucking a little past the board. I keep threatening to do what Paul has and have an extension added so that I can get a bit more "pop" at times. I do play a decent amount of arco and spend an inordinate amount of time aggressively wiping strings between tunes.

The other direction

Conversely, there are times, usually on ballads, where I go the other way and play higher up on the string for a softer, rounder sound. One bass, when "worked" properly, can get more than one particular sound.

Looky....
The stripe of purple heart was added by my luthier, Bob Ross, for historical reasons; to show exactly where the addition was placed and when. The top shot is the purfling design on the back of my bass. I couldn't delete it.

On "Blues and Roots" he does a bit.
(Atlantic Records, I believe)

I think Brian Bromberg uses it as well
