right thumb wrapping the finger board

is this normal? whenever I play (sitting or standing) I find it gives me much more leverage than simply keeping my thumb in my palm (count to 4 with your fingers, you'll see) I play unamped and unmiced usually, with extremely light strings. with a new bass on the way that will be used in conjunction with a K&K Double Big Twinand a small combo amp, with heavier strings. will my problem go away after this? I think it's me simply trying to make myself louder (with 6 altos/4 bones/2 guitars/5tpts in my band). your thoghts?
thanks in advance,
Coleman
