| Hoi, Bats
Nice sounding group. It's fun to see the joy the pianist is taking with his music.
That tune, whatever it is, centers around C minor. Listen to the bass player hanging around C minor and hear how the saxophonist is playing around with it, going inside and outside of that home place.
There is no simple way to tell anyone (including you) "how to play like that" in one email (or even many emails). People on this fine site can offer suggestions to questions like, "What key is this?" or "How does the bridge to this song go?" or "Why is Marcus Johnson hanging his head in that picture?" or "Suggest three great Scott Colley records?" We can't do a great job with, "How do I drive a band on a medium-up modal tune?" which is what you are asking.
We can't answer it because everybody has their own answer. Those guys have been playing for a while. Each of them started with less skill and worked to achieve what he displays in the video. As they say, "It takes several years to get past the beginner mistakes and move on to the advanced mistakes."
That said and meant, two suggestions which seem obvious but might not be:
a) Find a teacher and take some lessons. Find some people to play with and play with them. Repeat often.
b) Look up Pieter de Graaf. Ask him who that bassist is. Go see him play some more. Don't lose that spark you feel!
Enjoy the journey. Let us know.
