Get a teacher if you don't already have one. Simandl is great to learn, but is more effective if you have an experienced hand guiding you.

If there are Frets on your DB you have your first problem.

The 'Book I' as mentioned is the basic of the two books BUT now there is a new Simandl that you should start with instead, 'My First Simandl' by William Eckfeld & Amy Rosen published by Carl Fischer.

Get this Book. It is brand new and better for beginners to start with. If you are serious and get thru this, then get Book I BUT get a teacher asap or you wont be FLASH Never with the DB.

Don't worry. Paul Chambers, Reggie Workman, Eddie Gomez, Stanley Clarke and most of the other greats worked with Simandl as well. It will make you play better abd in tune as well.

You're right, I'm just fooling. The Simandl method is an excellent way to learn good intonation, articulation, and bow technique, and will surely improve my classical technique as well as my jazz technique.
